Both vessels Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A large-scale rescue and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search Missions Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying a minimum of nine total crew members, per a official statement.

The boats had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Island

Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country began.

Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Political tensions have increased over the past months, with comments from several representatives emphasizing the delicate situation regarding relations.

Responding to recent comments, a prominent official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.

The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the sailboats and secure the safety of the crews.

To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
