Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to duplicate the higher calling he encountered as head of the Three Lions.

The former coach suggested his aim to channel his attention toward working with the next generation and countering what he labeled a dominant downbeat story now prevalent in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Away from Coaching

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about talk linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Leading up to the publication of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is highly enthusiastic about setting examples for teenagers, applying lessons from his tenure as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate believes that his journey coaching England, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he commented: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He continued: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Discord

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often emphasizes disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

His upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to present additional perspectives on management and public spirit drawn from his notable time in football.
