Shock as Renowned South African DJ Killed in the Heart of Johannesburg.
A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before running away.
The reason of the incident is unknown and no arrests have been made, as per the official statement.
The Fatal Incident
Authorities revealed that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the property overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, as per local media.
"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," an official report said.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what looked like a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down on the opposite side of the road.
Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to determine their location," stated a police chief.
Outpouring of Grief
His sister, a close relative, expressed the loved ones are reeling to process his death.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," she stated.
"We know he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were willing to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."
She appealed to the public to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's children.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
In addition to his media career, Stock was engaged in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, supplying VIP protection services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and participated in building evictions.

His death has caused national trauma and prompted an wave of remembrances from his fans, the government and various organizations.
A cabinet official remarked he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's untimely death.
"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my policies as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we should be," was his tribute.
A public representative stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director noted that "DJ Warras was far beyond a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a release, the broadcaster he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will endure".
Context of Crime
South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the world's highest rates of violent death, exacerbated by robberies and syndicate wars, with some dozens of citizens murdered daily in a recent six-month period, based on government figures.
