Cameron Norrie secured the most important victory of his professional journey by rebounding from a lost first set to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win represents Norrie's initial victory over a current world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the newest English competitor in history to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I fell in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the biggest victory of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the strongest athlete in the sport right now."

The British player, positioned 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's early career.

The top seed appeared to be progressing easily towards victory in the beginning as he eased through the first set.
