Forecasters have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, unlike last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, meaning warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Fall Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Activated

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this signified the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This involves a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
