Israelis have come together around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source said the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the differences between the both parties.

"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester one woman stated: "We must do any agreement required for the captives to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of the music event, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
