Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom commented when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has emerged as a notable opponent of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. Duffy revealed plans to cut government money from California and suggested revoking the power to issue trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, after a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was blocking $40 million from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous statement addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A this month's poll found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, the governor stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The notion that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, amazing," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
