Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Debate
The video footage, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously served in armed forces or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all made an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the lawmakers affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that violate the statutes or our constitution."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a angry response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership issued a combined statement condemning the comments.
"Political violence has no role in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Representatives' Strong Response
The officials who appeared in the video also published a statement.
"We are ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this country and swore an oath to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the death of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this without delay and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
