A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book accommodation upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of bed down in the airport – but soon learned the local airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. With no idea quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, thinking I could pass the evening in an establishment that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for acing an interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused because a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she offered I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, given that my my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one filled rolls she brought back her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.
With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a woman letting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.
I never did study at ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has rewarded her generosity tenfold. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
