A Emotional Moment when Rosenior Shatters Boundaries

"Rosenior represents a quality manager that understands the game inside out, and that's what matters most.

"However, as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club named Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a multi-club ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been a mere 12 black managers – not including individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he knows the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe someone like Liam in charge of their club, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for equality… it is profound demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, this represents a massive moment for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by a lack of representation at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of top-flight footballers are from black backgrounds.

However, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of board and senior leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, based on figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of his appointment as the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to striving to break those obstacles down."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining big five leagues regarding homegrown representation.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 in La Liga in Spain, Twelve of the 18 are German while 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all aspiring British managers from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating to young English coaches in the system to see someone land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a five-month stint at then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not influence coaching skill arguing that opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" or "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted he was "ashamed" to hear an unnamed coach make a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.
